When organising waste removal whether it be through skip hire, wait and load services, RORO hire or any other forms of waste removal, you want to ensure that you are dealing with a fully accredited and licensed operator. Unfortunately, there are a lot of companies out there who do not comply with the basic environmental protocols when handling or dealing with waste.
How to choose the right waste contractor?
To work at your premises a contractor should be insured for the work they are planning to do. Public and employer’s liability insurance is standard.
Bringing in a contractor to work at your premises carries with it a range of risks to you, the building and the other people working in the building. A contractor needs to their utmost to reduce the risks associated with the work involved, the best way to do this is to ensure the contractor you use carries out their work within an approved Health & Safety Management system that creates risk assessments for all work undertaken.
Your duty of care is to ensure the waste is disposed of properly and the company you ask to do the work is licenced by the environment agency. All paperwork should be provided to you including a waste transfer note for the general waste clearance as well as consignment notes for hazardous waste streams. You should also want to know where the waste is being taken to, the recycling and reuse figures and what has happened to the waste once it has been taken offsite.
It is probably best to get to know the contractor. Do some background checks on their history, the main people involved and most importantly ask for testimonials or references for the similar type of work they have done for other clients.
